CHAPTER 11: FINISHED WALL HANGING
Final design: The wall hanging was finished largely as
previously reported. The shape of the sheer fabric word “Flood” in the
middle of the bottom row was altered to a concave curve to echo the lines of
the river stitching above it (thank you Sian for this idea).
Backing and Edges: I decided that a simple plain edge would suit
this piece best.
- A green homespun cotton backing was used with a layer of wadding in between. As the wadding I had on hand was not adhesive, I attached it to the backing fabric with parallel lines of machining about 8cm apart.
- I also attached a rod pocket to the backing fabric so that I could insert a thin flat strip of wood. In retrospect I should have attached this a few cm lower down, but it worked satisfactorily.
- The backing fabric was machined to the work on 3 sides (right sides facing) and then turned inside out and the bottom edge turned in and finished by hand.
- I made a twisted cord with two strands of each of the blue-green Perle 5 colours used for the river stitching and attached this to the wooden strip with a staple gun to provide a means of hanging the finished piece.
EVALUATION OF WALL HANGING
The completed embroidered assessment
piece for Module Six is a Wall Hanging
based on a conservation theme. I
decided to work on the theme of healthy rivers and the cycles of drought and
flood that are typically seen in Australia. A healthy water flow and
replenishment of the soil are essential for good growth of crops and pasture.
How do you feel about the resulting
conclusion?
I think the piece captures well the
idea of rivers and cycles. I tried several other options before settling on the
final design - it seemed that a simple approach conveyed the message more
clearly. The hand dyed fabric and threads that I used gave a suitable backdrop
and did not overpower the main message. However I can think of many other
design possibilities that could be explored in future work. I particularly liked the heavily machined embroidered rivers.
Is it fit for its purpose - give
reasons?
The piece is fit for its purpose in
two ways. First it meets the size requirements and can be hung on the wall as
called for in the brief and second, it represents the theme of river cycles
through the use of river shapes, and choice of stitching and lettering. The
hand stitching that was added gave the impression of clumps of grasses or crops
growing along the rivers.
If you were asked to make it again,
what changes would you make to the way you designed it and the way you made it?
If asked to make this again I would
probably explore some other design options and try to incorporate the idea of
salinity as a problem associated with drought. I did some preliminary work on
this but decided to omit this element in order to simplify the design. I have
not worked on a piece of this size before so there was quite a learning curve
in designing and constructing a larger piece. Although I took care to measure
everything and keep the rectangular shape as best I could, I am sure that I
could improve on this with more practice. I was pleased however as to how my
machine embroidery, including lettering, improved with the practice I gained in
this module.
